Legacy Giving
Giving Through a Will
Have you thought of what your legacy will be?
Together we can build a brighter future and a stronger community where everyone has the reading, writing, English speaking, and math skills they need to be successful. In addition to fulfilling an important role in providing for the future financial security of your family and others, your will or living trust can support free, individualized tutoring, with lessons tailored to each student’s skill level and personal goals.
Can I make a difference?
Yes! The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council (AACLC) relies on your support to provide free services to the community. Almost 70,000 adults in Anne Arundel County lack the skills needed to earn a GED. They are a risk for not understanding written materials or even basic vocabulary. The ramifications of low literacy flow into all areas of life.
Just as you can make a difference in our work now — you can continue to make a difference for generations to come.
How?
It’s easy to do.
As you are making your plans, you can support the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council through a bequest, as a remainder beneficiary, or through your IRA.
Bequest:
Making a charitable bequest to The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council means including us in your will. Your long-term gift keeps the AACLC’s important work in our community going for decades and generations to come.
It’s as simple as sharing this paragraph with your attorney, who can modify it as needed to craft your gift as you want it to be:
“I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, or its successors in interest, with offices at 80 West Street, Suite A, Annapolis, MD, 21401, federal tax ID 52-1479101, the sum of $X (amount written out), exclusive of my lifetime donations, if any, to be used for the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council’s most urgent priorities as determined by its board of trustees in their sole discretion.”
If you’d like more information about including the AACLC in your will, contact Jane Seiss at 410-269-4419 or director@aaclc.org.
Remainder Beneficiaries:
You can name the AACLC as a remainder beneficiary of your trust or on your insurance policy. After your passing, all or a portion of what remains in the trust can be a gift to the AACLC.
The gift in your trust means we’ll be helping and supporting many of Anne Arundel County’s residents in future decades and generations.
Speak to your attorney about adding the AACLC as a remainder beneficiary of your trust or on your insurance policy. They’ll need this information:
Legal name: Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, Inc.
Federal tax ID: 52-1479101
Physical Address: 80 West Street, Suite A, Annapolis, MD 21401
Mailing Address: P.O. Box 1303, Edgewater, MD 21037 (not sure if this is necessary)
IRA:
If you’re 70 ½ or over, you can make a gift to the AACLC from your IRA, today. Technically, it’s called a qualified charitable distribution, but many know it as a charitable IRA rollover.
This is a tax-savvy way to support our important work in the community. Your gift to the AACLC will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) and will be exempt from federal income tax. (You need to check with your tax advisor about how a gift of this type affects your individual circumstances.)
All you do is contact your IRA administrator and tell them you want to make a qualified charitable distribution to the AACLC. They’ll need this information, or you may need it to fill out a simple form:
Legal name: Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, Inc.
Federal tax ID: 52-1479101
Physical Address: 80 West Street, Suite A, Annapolis, MD 21401
Mailing Address: P.O. Box 1303, Edgewater, MD 21037 (not sure if this is necessary)
If you’re not yet 70 ½, you can name the AACLC as a beneficiary of your IRA. That means at your passing, there will be a gift to us.
Contact your IRA administrator and request their “Change of Beneficiary” form. You’ll need the information above to add AACLC as a beneficiary.

Are these the only ways I can give?
Absolutely not! There are many ways you can leave a legacy through your estate. Those listed above tend to be the most common. We strongly encourage you to speak to a trusted financial planner/estate attorney to determine the best fit for you.
Thank you for keeping the AACLC in your thoughts — your generosity will ensure that we are here to serve the generations to come.
