We enter 2021 with great hope for our programs and students. In 2020, a collective of Literacy Council tutors, students, staff, and community partners adapted in the face of tremendous challenges to continue our progress and achievements.

Last year, students accomplished a range of goals.

Some highlights:

  • Two students passed the Citizenship Test.
  • Five students passed the ASVAB and prepared to enlist in the military. Several more advanced through their studies and plan to retake the test in 2021.
  • One student earned a Maryland High School Diploma, and several students started or continued their high school equivalency studies, preparing to complete the GED or the NEDP.
  • Our ESL students practiced phone conversations with their tutors, Skyped, advocated for themselves, wrote emails, essays, and texts — gaining confidence in their English language skills.
  • Students made progress in their individualized curricula and spent time reading, researching, and writing to advance their skills.
  • Literacy Council students continued their education at AACC!
  • Lots of students learned to Zoom and improved their computer literacy.
  • Many voted, completed the U.S. Census, and increased their participation in their children’s education and in the community. Some got new or better jobs.

We are so proud of our students!

Thank you for joining us in our mission to teach adults and out-of-school youth the reading, math, and English language skills that promote self-esteem, independence, and strengthen family literacy.

Our programs and tutors enable students to be active, contributing members of their communities. As we approach recovery from the pandemic and its economic fall-out for the most vulnerable among us and as we continue to work for racial equity and equality, these endeavors are more important than ever.

Happy New Year,
