April was filled with exciting events and awards for AACLC. We have good news! We have achieved the 2013 Top Rated Great Nonprofit Award for our 40 five-star reviews. These reviews can be seen at greatnonprofits.org. AACLC has also received the Community & Employment Program Partners Award from The Abilities Network, and has been awarded a 2013 Walter Sondheim Leadership Intern for this summer.

Our new 2013 tutors graduated on March 23rd! A big thank you goes to our tutor trainers Dixie Catlett, Charlie Catlett, Phil Tawes, and Maggy Cullman for providing this well organized training, and to Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church for graciously allowing us to use their Fellowship Hall.
Thanks also to Lynnette Cloughley, Annette Graves, Diane Hagerty, Cynthia Palmer, Maureen Reynolds, Jae Sherwood, Tom Vernon, and Lina Vlavianos for your presentations and help during our training.
Our Follow On Session, which is required for new tutors, was held April 20th, 10:00-11:30 AM at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church.

A message from Jill York
Board members bore (oops – board!), leaders lead, tutors “tut”, grant experts write. I think it is time for a new group of volunteers to take on tasks that need doing but require a different set of skills and interests. We’re looking for people to:
- create, organize and oversee both volunteer recognition and community events
- possibly look for potential places to spread the word and make it happen
- recruit organizations to donate money, food, publicity, and create corporate sponsorships
- assure that such events are adequately staffed, oversee logistics, and assure that necessary materials are available
Frankly, I think it could be a lot of fun, a fantastic learning experience, and, most importantly, a great opportunity to promote literacy. Getting involved this way would also be a perfect opportunity for HS students to fulfill their community service obligations.

The Great Give Is…GREAT!
The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County has organized The Great Give, a 24-hour fundraising event to rally community support of local nonprofits.
Contributions to AACLC during the Great Give 24-hour period will help us continue to change lives for students like Nichol, Lan, and Jessica with our free, individualized, one-on-one literacy and ESL instruction for adults and out-of-school youth in Anne Arundel County. Governance Committee Chairwoman: Veronica Jagoe
Veronica Jagoe has joined our Board and Chair our Governance committee. Veronica brings with her a wealth of experience and wisdom to AACLC. She is the Legislative Aide for the Anne Arundel County Council, manages and administers the daily functions of the Displaced Homemakers Program, and is the Special Project Manager for the LEVER/DIP Programs (Substance Abuse Program).
Veronica has previously served as a Program Manager for the YWCA Counseling and Career Services, was a Career Consultant/Special Project Coordinator for the Business & Workforce Development Center, has been an Adjunct Faculty ESOL instructor for Anne Arundel Community College, and was an Adult Education Instructor for the Adult Learning Center in Buffalo, New York. She received her M.S. degree in Adult Education from Syracuse University, New York.

Annette Graves annette210@aol.comhas agreed to take on the Tutor Coordinator position. Annette is an educator and the Tutor Representative for the Board. She is currently tutoring both a basic literacy student and ESL student. She will help tutors through the training process, make sure they are matched with a student, and provide ongoing tutor support.
Maureen Reynolds maureenmreynolds@verizon.net is our new Student Coordinator. Maureen will follow the students from the initial contact through “graduation.” She will ensure that all students are assessed and matched with a tutor. Maureen previously worked as an assistant to Senators Barbara Mikulski and Jennie Forehand. She also served as Programs Abroad Coordinator for AFS Intercultural Programs, taught ESL classes at the Bahrain School, and has been both a tutor and assessor for our Literacy Council.
Dr. Lynda Salamon lyndasalamon@hotmail.com will be our Tutor Follow On Coordinator. Lynda is a retired English professor, a founding member of Anne Arundel Women Giving Together, and a former AACLC tutor. She will be coordinating our Tutor Tune Ups and Follow On sessions throughout the year. If you would be willing to lead a Tutor Tune Up, or have suggestions for guest speakers, please email Lynda.
Jae Sherwood toadsville@me.com a teacher and computer programmerby trade, is currently working for AACLC as our new computer facilitator. She is the one responsible for sending out the monthly forms that collect and report all the hours our volunteers put in every month. With these hours and our students’ successes documented, we are better able to apply for grant money and showcase our students’ achievements. Jae has previously worked for the Northern Virginia Literacy Council and volunteered her time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), representing abused and neglected children.
