Post image for Welcome Forrest Turetsky: Nonprofit Leadership Intern

We are delighted to have Forrest Turetsky from the University of Maryland, College Park as our 2013 Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Intern. The Walter Sondheim Jr. Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program was created to introduce high-achieving college students from across Maryland to career choices within the nonprofit sector. This year 20 students will be working within Nonprofits across the state on challenging, substantive projects.

Please welcome Forrest!

Post image for SPOTLIGHT: Student Jesse And Tutor Karrin Brady

Jesse not only holds down a cleaning job to support her two young children, she meets with me EVERY DAY because she is so motivated to learn to read. She’s looking forward to be able to help  her kindergartner and first grader with their homework, to read to them at night, and to eventually attend community college so she can train as a pharmacy technician. Jesse is an amazing woman: kind, generous, alert, smart, poised … but she has not had the opportunity to learn to read. We are a great team and both of our lives are better from having been brought together.

Post image for Literacy Council Needs Creative Volunteers!

A message from Jill York

Board members bore (oops – board!), leaders lead, tutors “tut”, grant experts write. I think it is time for a new group of volunteers to take on tasks that need doing but require a different set of skills and interests. We’re looking for people to:

  • create, organize and oversee both volunteer recognition and community events
  • possibly look for potential places to spread the word and make it happen
  • recruit organizations to donate money, food, publicity, and create corporate sponsorships
  • assure that such events are adequately staffed, oversee logistics, and assure that necessary materials are available

Frankly, I think it could be a lot of fun, a fantastic learning experience, and, most importantly, a great opportunity to promote literacy. Getting involved this way would also be a perfect opportunity for HS students to fulfill their community service obligations.

Hope we can make this happen. If interested, please contact me at:

Post image for The Great Give: From May 15 at 7pm to May 16 at 7pm

The Great Give Is…GREAT!

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County has organized The Great Give, a 24-hour fundraising event to rally community support of local nonprofits.

Contributions to AACLC during the Great Give 24-hour period will help   us continue to change lives for  students like Nichol, Lan, and Jessica with our free, individualized,  one-on-one literacy and ESL  instruction for adults and out-of-school youth in Anne Arundel County. See our story by clicking HERE.

Lunchtime Power Hour Award

We could win $1,500 if we have the highest number of contributors on May 16, from 12pm – 1pm.  As little as $5.00 counts!

Tell your friends…tell your family…mark your calendars!Deborah Ryan Johnson

Thanks to the support of the  GREAT GIVE 2013 sponsors,  AACLC will receive 100% of  every contribution given to  us during the Great Give,  and Bob Caspar, our Board  President, has pledged to  match every dollar donated  to AACLC up to $3000.00!  Bob’s generous pledge will  essentially double your  donation.

Please help. Be our champion and forward this email to your family and friends, along with a personal note as to why you believe in our work, and why they should donate to AACLC during the Great Give on May 15-16, 2013, from 7pm on the 15th to 7pm on the 16th.

Post image for SPOTLIGHT: Student Bertha Garcia And Tutor Annette Graves

Bertha Garcia is an energetic forty year old woman referred to us by the Anne Arundel Community College. She moved to the United States over twenty years ago from Mexico with her husband and two children. Bertha’s son is about to graduate from college and her thirteen year old daughter is doing well in the Anne Arundel County Public School System. Through the years, Bertha and her husband always stressed the importance of education with their children.

Bertha’s husband died unexpectedly nearly a year ago. Since that time, she has been working two jobs to support her family. One of her jobs is in the bakery department of a supermarket, where she recently turned down a supervisory position because she felt she did not have the speaking and writing skills necessary to do the job.

Bertha is an absolute joy to work with and is every teacher’s dream of the ideal student. She is always cheerful, reliable, and hard-working. She is progressing rapidly and hopes to be able to take a supervisory position the next time she has the opportunity. Another goal of hers is to prepare for her GED.
