Bertha Garcia is an energetic forty year old woman referred to us by the Anne Arundel Community College. She moved to the United States over twenty years ago from Mexico with her husband and two children. Bertha’s son is about to graduate from college and her thirteen year old daughter is doing well in the Anne Arundel County Public School System. Through the years, Bertha and her husband always stressed the importance of education with their children.

Bertha’s husband died unexpectedly nearly a year ago. Since that time, she has been working two jobs to support her family. One of her jobs is in the bakery department of a supermarket, where she recently turned down a supervisory position because she felt she did not have the speaking and writing skills necessary to do the job.

Bertha is an absolute joy to work with and is every teacher’s dream of the ideal student. She is always cheerful, reliable, and hard-working. She is progressing rapidly and hopes to be able to take a supervisory position the next time she has the opportunity. Another goal of hers is to prepare for her GED.
