The Good Time Gang in Gambrills

Tremendous thanks go out to the 1st Baptist Church in Glenarden, their pastor John Jenkins and his wife Trina, the Good Time Gang in Gambrills, and Lee Goode a.k.a. DJ Dynasty for generously preparing 30 Thanksgiving meal food boxes for low-income Literacy Council students throughout Anne Arundel County! During Brooklyn Flowers’ senior year in high school her military stepfather received temporary duty orders that moved the family from Mississippi to Fort Meade. Due to a series of events, it was too late to register Brooklyn at the on-base school. She needed an alternative or she would have to repeat her entire senior year, so Brooklyn and her parents decided to pursue a GED via home school and hoped to find a GED preparation program. Tremendous thanks to the First Baptist Church in Glenarden and their Pastor John Jenkins with his wife Trina, Lee Goode a.k.a. DJ Dynasty, and the Good Time Gang in Gambrills! They gathered and prepared 30 boxes of delicious Thanksgiving food for our AACLC students on Saturday, then Literacy Council staff and tutors delivered them to low-income students throughout Anne Arundel County.
More good news! Student Gwendolyn Brown has launched an exciting and rewarding new career mentoring at-risk girls in Anne Arundel County. Her inspirational story is shared under “Success Stories” (Click here).
Also, another AACLC student has achieved her GED! Please take a moment to celebrate with Brooklyn Flowers and her tutors Dr. Perinaaz Gandhi and Susann Felton. Brooklyn’s hard work and determination to achieve her high school diploma are also shared in “Success Stories.”

The need and demand is great for free adult literacy and math tutoring. Here is a sample of recent students seeking AACLC tutors:
- Walter wants to improve his reading and math skills to enroll in job training college classes.
- Tarhonda would like to get a GED and enroll in cosmetology school.
- Jason would like to get his GED so he can open his own bakery/pastry shop.
- Bernard has been homeless and wants help with his reading and writing skills.
- Rosalyn has been working towards earning her GED.
- Antonio would like help with his reading and writing skills to better his life.
- Alicia and her husband Juan want to improve their English before they take the U.S. citizenship test.
- Bobby would like to work on his reading skills to improve his job prospects.
- Mia needs to pass a test to qualify for job advancement and enter other education.
- Dayany wants to get her driver’s license and find employment.

Make no mistake: learning to read changes your life. The examples below are the kind of accomplishments we see regularly with our students:
- Anthony got a job and is now preparing for the GED.
- Ida has finished learning all 4 levels of Breakthrough To Math books and is now preparing for the GED.
- Michele passed the NEDP Essay.
- Brooklyn passed the Science test for her GED.
- Latoya received her high school diploma and is working to pass entrance exams for college.
- Nicole has completed 2 of the NEDP units and is working on the 3rd unit.

Twenty-five new AACLC literacy and math volunteer tutors were trained and matched with students at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 5th. What a great tutor class!
