Clay
Collagraph
Wind Makes the Sail by Marcia Glesener DeFalco
Hand inked with multiple colors and handmade Oriental paper cut and applied individually. This was a new kind of printmaking for the artist. She also printed these three plates individually in a very small number. notes on this printmaking process: A collagraph print is made by gluing different materials to cardboard and creating a kind of collage. During the inking process, the ink will rub off surfaces that are smooth or higher and stay on surfaces that hold more ink, at edges, and at lower points thus creating the image. To protect the plate through the printing process it is sealed with one or more layers of shellac. A collagraph plate is quite sensitive and will be deformed by the pressure of the printing press so the collagraph editions are usually smaller. Chine-collé is a printmaking technique in which the image is transferred onto a surface that is bonded onto heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, that pulls finer details off the plate. ||
Intaglio Etching: Dragon Watching by Marcia Glesener DeFalco This piece depicts a winged dragon looking down from the branch of a plant. It was reverse printed by mixing up the background color on a flat surface then taking a large rubber roller and picking up the ink on the roller to hand roll across the plate so that the etched, indented lines did not have ink in them; two separate plates were inked and placed to pull the individual print by hand. The artist has always drawn dragons even as a child. Some of the background plants (a ground cover, weed called Creeping Charlie) were actually pressed into the dried, liquid asphalt. Marcia drew around them with a metal stylist and then pulled them off and drew in the lines before putting into the acid. Intaglio Etching: Peacock Blue by Marcia Glesener DeFalco This piece is a cropped representation of a male peacock with feathers spread. It is a two-color hand-rubbed plate print. From the artist: “My parents raised peacocks for many years on the family farm. ||
Intaglio Etching: You Turkey by Marcia Glesener DeFalco Three of seven. Three definitions of a turkey with drawings of the turkey; particularly difficult to execute since the letters/words and numbers have to be etched in backward as in a mirror so that they print out to read them. Hand-rubbed inked sections for additional colors; There was a time when the phrase “you turkey” was popular to use to say to a person who had blundered humorously — the artist liked to use that phrase as a young adult. Lithograph
Night Flight by Marcia Glesener DeFalco
A piece from the artist’s “Things That Fly” series — a study of half of a moth wing. This is the only lithograph the artist made. This subject was chosen for the art because Marcia thought the soft, fuzzy look of a moth’s wing lent itself well to the medium. notes on lithography: Lithography (from Ancient Greek, lithos, meaning ‘stone’, and, graphein, meaning ‘to write’) is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by German author and actor Alois Senefelder as a cheap method of publishing theatrical works. Lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or other suitable material. Lithography originally used an image drawn with oil, fat, or wax onto the surface of a smooth, level lithographic limestone plate. The stone was treated with a mixture of acid and gum arabic, etching the portions of the stone that were not protected by the grease-based image. When the stone was subsequently moistened, these etched areas retained water; an oil-based ink could then be applied and would be repelled by the water, sticking only to the original drawing. The ink would finally be transferred to a blank paper sheet, producing a printed page. This traditional technique is still used in some fine art printmaking applications. In modern lithography, the image is made of a polymer coating applied to a flexible plastic or metal plate. The image can be printed directly from the plate (the orientation of the image is reversed), or it can be offset, by transferring the image onto a flexible sheet (rubber) for printing and publication. Watercolor
Greek House I by Marcia Glesener DeFalco
A country stone home in rural Greece. Most people may think of watercolors as being very colorful. In this case, one color, black, was used to create a sketch-like appearance with brushstrokes of a very black and white landscape. From the artist: “These homes built with boulders and rocks on very rocky land were very, very old but still inhabited. Majestic and somehow mysteries to me. Inside they reminded me of cave dwellings. This one has a small church shrine on a hill in the background. These structures were everywhere throughout the countryside in Greece.” Unframed Dimensions: 17 3/4″ x 15″ Value: $30 Buy Now — click to email the art title & your donation price to Jane Seiss |
