Student Coordinator Maggie Kerchner; Board Members Michael Keller, Caroline Cañas, Michael Green, and Catie Comer; Jane Seiss; Isabel Brennan (J. Lohr); Anne Arundel County Community Engagement Officer Tiyana Parker; and Discoveries Library Manager Rachel Myers (left to right).

J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines selected the Literacy Council to receive one of fifty $5,000 donations it made to one charity in each state in 2024. The awards marked J. Lohr’s fiftieth anniversary. AACLC was honored to be chosen from among countless Maryland organizations for this generous gift. Our mission to tutor and uplift adults in our communities resonated with J. Lohr’s selection team.

Isabel Brennan, J. Lohr Area Manager, joined us at the book fair to learn more about our work and present the company’s donation.

Post image for Director’s Message October 2024

Thank you for participating in our fourth-annual book fair in all the ways that you did — as a donor, supporter, volunteer, shopper, partner, or sponsor! The event was a tremendous community success, with the highest turnout and support we’ve ever seen. See here for more details.

This month, some of our volunteers attended the ProLiteracy Conference in Baltimore. We hope to share some of what we learned in the weeks ahead. One stand-out takeaway —literacy organizations nationwide are accessing the ProLiteracy website for free tutor continuing education. We encourage you to check out ProLiteracy’s courses and webinars. Please see this post for more information.

Please don’t miss this month’s Severna Park Voice Educator of the Month column, featuring coverage of tutor Julia Pensyl’s experience as an AACLC volunteer.

Many thanks for all you do,

Jane

Refer a Friend to Train With Us

Our fall tutor training session will happen on October 19 at Woods Church in Severna Park!

We’re always looking for new, dedicated tutors and have a special need for help in northern Anne Arundel County (Glen Burnie and Brooklyn Park). There are always students on our waiting list from Annapolis and the Severn area as well. Please consider referring neighbors or friends who you think could be committed AACLC tutors.

ESL tutoring candidates will be particularly helpful. We’re also training basic literacy, math, and high school diploma preparation tutors.

Interested trainees should contact Jane at director@aaclc.org. Space is limited.
