We wanted to share this heartwarming note of thanks from a grateful student. It reminds us of a wonderful quote from B. B. King: “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.”
“I’m writing this letter to thank you. After I went through a big change in my life, I couldn’t rely on working with my hands to take care of my family. When I went to the workmans comp court, they directed me to get help in reading. After court, I started looking for help and I came across the Anne Arundel Adult Literacy Council. After a few months, I hooked up with Mrs. Della Glenn. After two or three times meeting with Della and getting into our first book, I knew this was the best thing I could ever have done.
Over the next two years I have gotten so much better in reading and comprehension. My confidence in reading is two hundred percent improved. So I thank Della for being the best tutor for me, and give thanks to organizations and sponsors that help keep the door open for people like me. We need all the help we can get to make it through life.”
Thanks,
Ernie
October brought exciting news that we have won a 2012 Top- Rated Great Nonprofit award, as well as the GuideStar Exchange Seal, demonstrating our commitment to transparency.
Additionally, The City of Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen officially presented our Literacy Council with a Proclamation at City Hall, in appreciation for 35 years of selfless commitment to improving literacy in our community.
We graduated 38 new tutors on October 13th, and held a Follow On session for them this past Saturday. We were also honored to participate in a conference held by the Annapolis Housing Authority and in the United Way of Central Maryland/Combined Federal Campaign/National Guard Reserve Charity Fair.
Please take a moment to read Dwede’s testimony on how reading has changed her life. You’ll also enjoy a spotlight on Ellie Morton, one of our many incredible tutors. Also check out our Top-Rated Great Nonprofit reviews, and our new and improved icanread.org.
Thank you for your support!

In September, 2012, Anne Arundel County issued a Proclamation, declaring September 8th as International Literacy Day to “pay a particular and public tribute to the efforts of the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, to commend the 35 years of selfless endeavors of its members and sponsoring groups and to make known the splendid service it offers to improving adult literacy in our community.”
We have trained thousands of volunteers to become literacy tutors since AACLC began in 1977 and have improved the lives of well over a thousand students and their families during that time as well.
We have so much to celebrate!
38 new tutors graduated on October 13, 2012, and a Follow On session was held for them in November. A big thank you to new tutor Delia McKenzie’s husband, Ross, for taking this picture for us!

We had 38 new tutors present at Day 1 of our tutor training on September 29th. These tutors are being trained in both basic literacy and ESL instruction, and will all be matched with students after the completion of their training on October 13th. A big thank you goes to Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church for graciously allowing us to use their meeting rooms for these two days of training.

The TD Charitable Foundation has long supported not-for-profit institutions and their important work throughout our region. Please stop by TD Bank’s new Edgewater branch, introduce yourself, and thank them for their generous support of our Literacy Council.
September was filled with productive activities and good news for our Literacy Council! In addition to holding our AA Cares fundraiser and receiving an “Education Nonprofit of the Week” designation, we staged a fundraiser and 35th Anniversary Celebration at Barnes & Noble. We also held a very successful Day 1 of our Fall tutor training, with 38 new tutors in attendance.
The AACLC was honored to receive a generous $5000.00 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, which was presented to us at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Grand Opening of the TD Bank in Edgewater, MD. We were interviewed by Fay Mauro on WNAV radio, featured in a Glen Burnie East Gazette article, and received Proclamations from Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis to honor our 35 years of improving adult literacy through our free, individualized, one-to-one tutoring program.
We have so much to celebrate!
Sincerely,
Lisa Vernon
