Lovell Offer celebrated graduation at AACC in November with his tutor Paul Baker and Paul's wife Pat (also a Literacy Council tutor).

Lovell Never Gave Up

by AACLC Tutor Paul Baker

Lovell Offer is an extremely busy person. He has a full-time job, sponsors a community charity, and is a parent to three children. In addition to all of those responsibilities, Lovell wanted to add another. He wanted to obtain his high school diploma. Not an easy feat for someone who is already very involved in life.

Since I am a volunteer with the Literacy Council, Lovell and I met online last summer. His goal, as he told me, was to complete the program in less than a year. That was an extremely ambitious goal! The NEDP has many working parts and is specifically geared for busy people with full-time schedules. It was a good match for Lovell’s skills and prior knowledge. The program covers such skill areas as financial literacy, history, health, government, science, and even the present workplace environment.

Lovell came very close to meeting his goal of obtaining his diploma within a year. He achieved that goal so quickly due to his perseverance, work ethic, “never give up” attitude, and openness to learning new things. And he did this all with good humor and grace.

Lovell and I never actually met in person while I was tutoring him. But his personality, ability to learn rapidly, and willingness to work towards a difficult goal all inspired me. His next step is to earn an associate’s degree through Anne Arundel Community College. There is no doubt that Lovell will very much succeed in achieving this next goal.
